My Kind of People | My Kind of Music | My Kind of Books
Omugurusi Festo Karwemera Mwene Karagare Kabure-Nkeecwere, now aged 95, is one of the brightest people I know. A great thinker and writer, he toils away at his desk, not for profit, but to save a language and culture, passed down to us by generations of ancestors, now threatened with erosion and potential …………
One artist that has enlivened my spirits is an old friend whose talent I only discovered recently. That she is producing her work inside Uganda is a bonus ……….
Enid Kacanda Kanyangyeyo gave my wife and I a beautiful cow. People from the cattle-keeping nations in Africa will understand what this means.
Crispus Mundua and I met in senior one at King’s College Budo in 1967, at an age where my political consciousness was in its embryonic stage. I was fascinated by his evident understanding of the political tensions that lay beneath the thin surface of tranquility at our school and in the country. Mundua was one of our go-to experts to help us understand the turmoil that was at home and abroad. He often spoke of leading a revolution, a concept that was more foreign to me than the scientific theories that I was beginning to learn.

It was a joy to spend precious time with our dear friend, brother and mentor, Omugurusi Zabuloni Kabaza at his home on Friday February 9, 2018. Mr. Kabaza was my father’s teacher at Kigyezi High School in 1946, then my teacher and headmaster at Kigyezi High School in 1965-66, and my Kateerarume (the one who beats the dew) when I was seeking my fiancée’s hand…….
We fondly called him Chief. I still call him Chief. Gregory Thabiso Lebona, Professor of Anatomy at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (previously Medical University of Southern Africa), was my classmate in Medical School. He shares the fascinating story of his journey from Waterford in Swaziland to Makerere University and beyond. In his words: “End of term, December 3 1970, 10.30 am; the parking lot was bubbling with excitement as pupils exchanged goodbyes. My younger siblings, Veronica, Andrew & I were waiting for our mum to fetch us. The familiar 7-hour drive to Maseru, Lesotho would be my very last. With a lump in my throat …………..
One of the reasons I enjoyed my high school years at King’s College, Budo, Uganda was the very high quality of teaching, supervision and nurturing we received from our teachers.
