The areas of Bushengyera (Rukiga and Ndorwa), Bufumbira, Kinkizi, Kayonza and Rujumbura were incorporated into the British Uganda Protectorate as the Kigezi District in 1911. Kigezi was part of Uganda at independence on October 9, 1962 and remained as such until it was divided into smaller starting in the 1970s. Should the Uganda government fulfill its commitment, each of the original counties will have become a district by July 1, 2017.
