1886 – German East Africa Protectorate declared.

1890 – Rwanda and Burundi handed to Germany’s sphere of influence.

1894 – Uganda becomes a British Protectorate.

1895 – East Africa Protectorate declared.

1897 – 1901 open up East Africa for colonial development.

1899 – Burundi becomes part of German East Africa.

1900 Rwanda becomes part of German East Africa.

1917 – Customs union of Kenya and Uganda established.

1919- German East Africa becomes Tanganyika. British rule begins.

1920 – East Africa Protectorate becomes Kenya Colony.

1922 – Burundi and Rwanda handed over to Belgium.

1927 – Tanganyika joins Kenya and Uganda in the Customs Union.

1945- East African Airways is incorporated.

1948 – East African High Commission (EAHC) established.

  1. East African Common Services Organization (EACSO) replaces EAHC.

1961 – Tanganyika becomes independent, ending colonial rule.

1962 – Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda become independent.

1963 – Kenya and Zanzibar becomes independent.

1964 – Revolution in Zanzibar.

1964- Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to become Tanzania.

1967- East African Community (EAC) established, replacing EACSO.

1968 – East African Currency Board collapses. Separate national currencies.

1970 – University of East Africa dissolved. Its colleges become universities.

1971 – Military coup in Uganda. Tanzania refuses to recognize new regime.

1977 – East African Community collapses.

1979 – Uganda – Tanzania war and overthrow of Ugandan President Idi Amin.

1993 – Tripartite Commission for East African Cooperation established.

1999 – East African Community revived by treaty.

2001- East African Legislative Assembly established.

2005 – East African Customs Union re-established.

2009 – Burundi and Rwanda join the East African Community.

2010 – East African common market for goods, labour and capital established.

2013 – Protocol for launching a monetary union within 10 years signed.

2016 – South Sudan joins the East African Community.
