& Drama

The most famous musical offering from Burundi is the drumming by the Royal Drummers of Burundi. An ensemble of 16 drums, played in unison and with great energy, passion and choreography, used to accompany the kings on tours of their realm. The royal drum known as Karyenda, the traditional symbol of Burundi, was said to have divine powers. The king would translate its sounds into rules that governed his subjects. The Rukinzo drum accompanied the king wherever he went.
